HYDROGEN PEROXIDE
DESCRIPTION |
Hydrogen peroxide is a chemical compound with the formula H2O2. In its pure form, it is a very pale blue liquid that is slightly more viscous than water. Hydrogen peroxide is a reactive form of oxygen and the simplest peroxide, a compound having a single oxygen–oxygen bond. Decomposes slowly when exposed to light and quickly in the presence of organic or chemically active compounds. Hydrogen peroxide is found in biological systems, including the human body. Enzymes that use or decompose hydrogen peroxide are classified as peroxidases. The boiling point according to extrapolation, the temperature of H2O2 is 150.2 °C (302.4 ° F), which is about 50 ° C (90 ° F) higher than that of water. In practice, when heated to this temperature, hydrogen peroxide undergoes potentially explosive thermal decomposition. It can be safely distilled at lower temperatures under reduced pressure. Under standard conditions, hydrogen peroxide is a colorless syrupy heavy polar liquid with a "metallic" taste, infinitely soluble in water, alcohol and diethyl ether. It is also a good solvent. It is released from the water in the form of unstable crystallohydrate H2O2 ∙ 2H2O. |
